If you are looking for a natural hair coloring alternative, natural dyes are the best option to change or intensify your color using a formulation based on plant-based ingredients without chemicals. Within this world of coloring, you will also find related terms such as vegetable dyes, organic dyes, henna for hair, and plant-based coloring, which usually offer the same coloring experience. Just be sure to check the ingredient list carefully.
How do you dye your hair naturally and achieve a good application? In addition to choosing the right shade, it is important to prepare the product correctly, work through the hair in sections, and respect the times indicated for each of our products.
In this guide, we explain step-by-step how to apply a natural hair dye for our products, following the official instructions for use.
What do you need to apply a natural dye?
Remember that each color has different resting times and recommended amounts of water, but for the purposes of this article, we will use the Tierra shade as an example.
Before starting, make sure you have on hand:
- 1 packet of 100 g of Fátima natural dye.
- Up to 310 ml of room temperature water.
- A bowl to mix the ingredients.
- A Reusable Eco-Brush for application (recommended).
- Clips or clamps to section the hair.
- Gloves.
- A garment that can get stained.
- Plastic wrap or a thin bag to cover your hair.
- A dark or old towel to dry yourself after rinsing.
Our step-by-step guide recommends using, preferably, potable water and paying attention to the texture during preparation to avoid adding excess water.
How to dye hair naturally step by step
1. Pour out the entire content of the natural dye
Start by placing the entire contents of the packet, which corresponds to 100 g, in a bowl.
Even if you are only going to work on the roots, the instruction is to use the entire content. This allows you to maintain the proportions intended for the preparation of the product.
2. Add the water little by little
Gradually add up to 310 ml of room temperature water, mixing until you reach a texture similar to puree.
Do not add all the water at once. Observe the texture of the preparation to avoid using too much water.
It is normal for the mixture to have some lumps.
Tip
The consistency of the mixture is important to be able to work the product through the hair comfortably and ensure a uniform application.
3. Let the mixture rest for 30 minutes
Once prepared, let the mixture rest for 30 minutes at room temperature and uncovered.
This time is part of the process indicated for each of our products.
Preparation before applying the dye
4. Prepare your hair
To apply natural dye, your hair does not have to be clean, although it is recommended to avoid excess oil to get a better result.
The hair can be dry or slightly damp.
Before starting, divide the hair into different sections using clips or clamps. Working with thin sections will make the application easier.
5. Protect your skin
You can apply cream or oil to the hairline on your forehead, around your ears, and on your neck to avoid stains during application.
According to the user guide, any stains that may occur will disappear in a maximum of two days.
6. Remove accessories and jewelry
Before starting, remove accessories and jewelry to work more comfortably and prevent them from coming into contact with the product.
7. Put on gloves and wear appropriate clothing
Use gloves and an old garment that can get stained.
The dye may come into contact with your clothes during application, so it is advisable to protect them before starting.
Application of the natural dye
8. Apply the product with a brush
Now begin the application of the natural hair dye.
Work with thin sections of hair to allow the mixture to penetrate correctly. Using a brush, apply plenty of the mixture from the nape of the neck forward, leaving the forehead area for last.
It is important to use the entire mixture to achieve effective pigmentation.
Press the product well onto the hair so that it adheres correctly, especially when you are working on gray hair.
To facilitate this process, you can use the Fátima Reusable Eco-Brush.
Why start from the nape?
Even if you don't have gray hair at the nape, the recommendation is to always start from the back, in the lower area, and advance progressively towards the front area.
The forehead area should be left for the end of the application.
9. Cover the hair
Once the application is finished, cover your entire head with plastic wrap or a thin bag.
This step is important because the mixture must remain moist; if the mixture dries out, it will not dye well.
10. Let it act for 60 minutes
With your hair properly covered, let the product rest for 60 minutes.
Rinsing and aftercare
11. Rinse thoroughly
Once 60 minutes have passed, begin the rinsing process.
First, rinse your hair with plenty of running water. Then, use shampoo and conditioner to remove any product residue.
To dry yourself, it is recommended to use a dark or old towel, as it may get stained.
It is also recommended to use it for about a week, as the hair may continue to release pigment.
When can the final color be seen?
After the coloring process, the color continues to develop.
The user guide indicates that the final color will be visible after 48 hours. Therefore, avoid evaluating the definitive result immediately after rinsing.
During the first week, you should also consider that the color may transfer when the hair is wet. For this reason, pigment transfer to clothing or sheets may occur during this period.
Which natural dye shade should you choose?
Fátima offers a range of natural hair dyes with nine shades. You can choose from warm colors, browns, and dark tones depending on the result you are looking for.
Dorado (Golden): Warm, luminous, and with golden highlights.
Ámbar (Amber): Warm and luminous, with more intense copper-red nuances.
Caoba (Mahogany): Warm and intense, with marked reddish nuances.
Almendra (Almond): Warm, soft, chocolatey, and natural.
Tierra (Earth): Warm and earthy, with a natural appearance.

Nogal (Walnut): Deep brown with higher intensity.
Ébano (Ebony): Dark, deep chestnut with a natural appearance.

The final result may vary depending on the base color of your hair and its individual characteristics. Therefore, it is recommended to consider your current shade before selecting the color.
